Concordia Academy-Bloomington Update for November 10, 2006
Vol. 7, No. 12

FALL PLAY, "THE MATCHMAKER," IS HERE!
Thornton Wilder's "The Matchmaker," the play on which "Hello Dolly" is based, comes to life on the CA-Bloomington stage THIS WEEKEND, November 10 and 11 at 7:30 p.m. and November 12 at 2:30 p.m. In this farce, an old merchant in Yonkers decides to take a wife and, to that end, hires a matchmaker who becomes involved in the lives of him, his clerks, assorted ladies, and others. The play is directed by Heather (Baker) Wydeven. Admission is $6.00 for adults and $4.00 for students and senior citizens. CA-Bloomington students are admitted at no charge. Advance reservations can be made by calling 952-854-0224, ext. 109. You can also make reservations online by clicking here. Please join us for a fun evening of theatre!

SHARON HINCK BOOK SIGNING IS TONIGHT BEFORE "THE MATCHMAKER"
Sharon Hinck, a 1977 graduate of Lutheran High School and parent of Concordia Academy-Bloomington students, will be answering questions and signing copies of her new book, "The Secret Life of Becky Miller," at CA-Bloomington on Friday, November 10 (6:30 - 7:30 p.m.). The book tells the tale of Becky Miller, a young mom who wants to do Big Things for God. Her vivid daydreams help her cope with the pressure to be a wonderful wife and a marvelous mother. Come and meet Sharon, enjoy some refreshments, and learn more about Becky Miller and Sharon’s upcoming projects, including the Becky Miller sequel. After the book signing, plan to stay for the 7:30 performance of The Matchmaker!

PARENTS, FAMILIES, ALUMNI, SUPPORTERS INVITED TO NEXT WEEK'S PATRON DINNER WITH GOV. AL QUIE
On Saturday, November 18, all CA-Bloomington supporters, including current parents, alumni, families, and others, are invited to help celebrate our school's 43 years of educational ministry at the 2006 Patron Dinner. The featured speaker will be former Governor Al Quie, who will be returning to the event after an appearance at the 1971 Lutheran High School Patron Dinner. The event will be held at the school.
Quie, who served as Minnesota’s governor from 1978-1982 and was a U.S. Representative prior to that, is no stranger to Christian education. His children attended Minnehaha Academy, and three grandsons have attended Concordia in Roseville. He has most recently been active in Prison Ministry Fellowship, a national Christian organization he founded with Chuck Colson. In accepting the invitation to speak, he commented, “Anytime I get an opportunity to talk about my Lord Jesus Christ, I’m ready.” Proceeds of the event will benefit the newly-established Lancer Legacy Fund, a scholarship fund designed to provide direct tuition assistance to students with financial need. Additionally, proceeds will be partially matched by a special grant from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. All CA-Bloomington families have received invitations and may reserve their spots by returning the reply card to the school. A punch reception starts at 5:30 p.m.; dinner follows at 6:00 p.m. Dinner includes tossed greens, garlic chicken pasta with steamed broccoli, basil rolls, carrot cake, water, and coffee. Tickets are $40 per person; $20 of each ticket is tax deductible. Reservations need to made by Monday, November 13. If you have questions, please contact Lynn Henry or Chris Roth. We look forward to having you be a part of this evening of celebration.

CA-BLOOMINGTON BARNES & NOBLE BOOKFAIR IS NOVEMBER 27
On November 27, up to 25% of purchases made at the Edina Galleria Barnes & Noble will go to CA-Bloomington. Here's how:
• Make your gift or personal list of items such as books, games, cards, stationery, videos, CDs, magazines, puzzles, Godiva chocolate, and specialty teas and coffees.
• Think ahead! Are you a member of a book club? Wouldn’t it be nice to take care of upcoming occasions like birthdays and baby gifts? What about keeping something on hand for host/hostess gifts? If you’re planning a trip or expecting visitors, what about a memento of the Twin Cities or Minnesota?
• On November 27, shop at the Galleria Barnes & Noble, and bring your list and the special voucher (available here or at the store’s cash register on that day).
• Tell the salesperson that your purchase supports Concordia Academy-Bloomington. This is VERY IMPORTANT, or else we won’t get the credit.
• Need a special item? Barnes & Noble will hold specially-ordered items for up to two weeks.
• If you have a Barnes & Noble membership card, your purchases can still qualify.
Spread the word to friends, family, and co-workers, so we can make the most of this exciting fundraising opportunity. Questions? Call the office at 952-854-0224. We'll see you at Barnes & Noble on November 27!

STUDENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO PACKAGE VEAP THANKSGIVING MEALS
Student council is sponsoring a service opportunity on Thursday, November 16. Twenty students are needed to help package Thanksgiving meals for VEAP (Volunteers Enlisted to Assist People). A big THANK YOU goes out to all the parents and students who so generously gave of their time to make and package all the candy for the Sweet Delight Candy Sale. Those who helped more than once deserve a special "thank you." The money from candy making goes directly to make Concordia Academy a better place for students.
