Concordia Academy-Bloomington Update for October 13, 2006
Vol. 7, No. 8

SCHEDULE REMINDERS
First quarter ends on Tuesday, October 17. Wednesday, October 18, is a half-day for testing for freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. There is no school on Thursday, October 19, and Friday, October 20, so teachers can attend the Lutheran Education Conference and an in-service. Second quarter starts on Monday, October 23, and first quarter report cards will be mailed later that week. Please remember that families must be current with tuition and fees before report cards are sent.

CA-BLOOMINGTON TO ADD JUNIOR HIGH
Lynn Henry, Concordia Academy Interim Chief Administrative Officer and principal of Concordia Academy-Bloomington, has announced plans for CA-Bloomington to expand from a grades 9-12 school and add grades seven and eight in the fall of 2007.
“A seventh though twelfth grade Lutheran school will be the first of its kind in the Twin Cities, offering a Christ-centered and academically challenging alternative for families,” she explained. In the past year, CA-Bloomington has sought input feedback from area association Lutheran grade schools that have been valuable partners to Concordia (and, previously, to Lutheran High School). “Our prayer and intent is that we will maintain our strong partnerships in ministry to children and youth here in the Twin Cities. Our K-8 schools are predicated on a ministry model that will remain the first choice for many families, and we pray that those schools will continue to be successful with that structure,” added Henry. CA-Bloomington will continue with the same program of recruitment events for the high school but will refrain from any direct marketing of the junior high program within existing K-8 Lutheran schools. Plans are for the seventh and eighth grades to be housed in a separate wing of the school. “CA-Bloomington is positioned to offer a strong academic program in a variety of areas, including foreign language (Spanish), instrumental and choral music, and advanced math offerings. Additionally, we anticipate that with the addition of grades levels, we will be able to provide a wider range of activities in athletics, theater, and ministry,” said Henry. Watch for further updates about this exciting new program in the coming months, and, in the meantime, start spreading the word!

LANCERS WRAP UP HOMECOMING WITH A WIN
Congratulations to the Lancers for their 33-15 Homecoming victory against Providence Academy on Friday night, and thanks to all the students, staff, parents, alumni, and friends that made the week a huge success. Special thanks to student council advisor Grace Kelzer and the entire student council for all their hard work!

SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT OUR FALL OPEN HOUSE
The CA-Bloomington fall open house for prospective students and families will be held on Sunday, October 29, 2:00-4:00 p.m. Please starting spreading the word to friends and family members who are looking for the sort of Christ-centered, quality education offered at Concordia. The open house is a great opportunity for families to meet teachers, students, and parents; tour the school; and get answers to questions. If you'd like copies of our open house postcard or poster to distribute, please contact the office.

PRAYER CHAIN INFORMATION
All CA-Bloomington parents and friends are invited to be part of the Prayer Chain. Each week families subscribing to this special email group receive a list of prayer requests that have come from all over the CA-Bloomington community. If you would like to receive the weekly prayer list, please email your name and email address to Vikki Murray at vikki.murray@toro.com. Prayer requests can also be emailed directly to Vikki or to Marilee Schneider (marilee.schneider@concordiaacademy.com) or Lynn Henry (lynn.henry@concordiaacademy.com). Colossians 4:2 -- "Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful."

NEXT WEEK IS "TEEN READ WEEK"
Next week, October 16 - 18 we will be celebrating "Teen Read Week". I have five opportunities for participation for our students.
1. Every book that he/she checks out is worth one point.
2. All adults will be on the lookout for students reading anything that is not an assignment. Every time he/she is caught a 1 point credit slip will
be given.
3. Every recommended book form that is turned in to me is worth one point per book. The student is to tell me the name of the book, the author and
why he/she would like a friend to read it.
4. "Who Am I" contest. Everyone who guesses who the mystery woman is will receive a 1 point credit slip.
5. I have two new sections in our library. One section is for new books and the other section is for teen reading. If he/she finds both sections a
credit slip will be given.
All slips must be turned in to me WITH THE STUDENT NAME ON IT B by 3:00 on Wednesday. I will tally all the points and hand out prizes on Monday. -Phyl Mueller

FROM THE NURSE
There has been a case of Pertussis (Whooping Cough) at school. Please be on the lookout for symptoms and see your doctor as needed. The first symptoms of pertussis are similar to a cold: sneezing, a runny nose, possibly a low-grade fever, and a cough. After one or two weeks, the cough becomes severe as noted by the following: the cough occurs in sudden uncontrollable bursts; the person may vomit while coughing; the cough is worse at night; between coughing spells the person seems well, but the illness is exhausting over time. Pertussis is spread when an infected person coughs or sneezes contaminated droplets into the air and another person inhales them. Teenagers and adults account for more than half of reported cases. Pertussis can be treated with antibiotics. There is also a new vaccine available for teens and adults. Please see your doctor if pertussis is suspected. As usual, good hand-washing and covering coughs is the best prevention. Please let the school know if your child is diagnosed with pertusis. Thank you. -Trudi Woodard, RN
